- Add shock in the evening – This prevents UV rays from breaking down the chlorine before it works.
- Circulate thoroughly – Run your pump and filter continuously for at least 24 hours after shocking.
During and after shocking, your water will likely look worse before it improves. This is normal—dead algae particles cloud the water temporarily.
Step 4: Run Your Filter Continuously
Your filter is your best friend in algae recovery:
- Keep the pump running 24/7 for the first 24–48 hours
- Check and clean the filter regularly – A clogged filter cannot remove dead algae particles
- Backwash if using a sand or cartridge filter – This clears trapped debris
Continuous filtration removes suspended algae and helps clarify the water faster.
Step 5: Retest and Rebalance
After 24 hours, test your water again:
- Chlorine should have dropped back to 1–3 ppm (safe for swimming)
- pH and alkalinity may need minor adjustment
- If algae persists, repeat the shock treatment and wait another 24 hours
It typically takes 2–5 days to fully recover a moderately green pool. Severe cases may take a week or longer.
